Top 10 Rare Aquarium Fish to Keep at Home

Today we're gonna be talking about the top 10 most rare aquarium fish and for this list I made sure not to choose obvious things like an Asian Arowana but instead I went through and took hours and hours looking through different sites to find you guys some amazing fish that you've probably never heard of and this guys also have some crazy things about them.

1. Zebra Pike ( Crenicichla Zebrina )

Zebra Pike ( Crenicichla Zebrina )

It's a type of cichlid that can be found in South America and it was just recently discovered so if you're able to land your hands on one of them you could be one of the only people in the world to have one and you could make some discoveries that are ended up in record books. A company in Asia just recently got six of these guys and what they did is they paid for an ultrasound to try to sex them and attempt to breed them I'm not sure if they were able to breed them yet but the full video is on YouTube and pretty amazing to watch. To keep one of these you're gonna need a pretty big tank and you're gonna need fast moving waters because they do come from fast moving rivers in South America. They get about 12 inches long so I'd recommend a 200 gallon for one of them but to be honest it's going to be really hard to find one considering how RARE they are and the fact that they're $500 minimum if you're even able to find one.

2. Abei Puffer/ Mekong River Puffer ( Pao cf. Palustris )

Abei Puffer/ Mekong River Puffer ( Pao cf. Palustris )

This is a super rare breed of puffer fish that is completely freshwater they grow about 8 inches long and there's almost no information on the internet about these guys and there's also no place to buy them on the entire internet.

3. Guinea Fowl Puffer / SAPO puffer ( Arothron Meleagris )

Guinea Fowl Puffer / SAPO puffer ( Arothron Meleagris )

This is actually a variety of the golden puffer which is really expensive and somewhat rare puffer fish only this variety is so much more rare I mean. I have never seen one of these in my many years of going to pet stores and it's even harder to find one online. I found this one site that had them for $600 and that's gonna be the absolute minimum you're find one for. They get about 20 inches long and they need about a 200 gallon tank because they do swim a lot but these guys seem like an absolutely amazing pet.

4. Florida Red Gar ( Lepisosteus platyrhincus )

Florida Red Gar ( Lepisosteus platyrhincus )

If you can find a true red gar you will be one of the few people on earth to actually have one of these as a pet. They get an average of 52 inches long so you're gonna need a thousand gallon tank minimum it's probably not even swim well suited for a tank. Let's be real gar are so long and not very agile they can't really turn around in the tank but they are very beautiful and this is guys is gonna run you $500 minimum but beyond that i mean good luck finding a red gar.

5. Short Body Red-Tailed Catfish ( Phractocephalus hemioliopterus )

Short Body Red-Tailed Catfish ( Phractocephalus hemioliopterus )

This is a variety of the normal red-tailed catfish that you can probably find at any exotic fish shop in your area only these guys have a way smaller body and they're actually hillarious looking in my opinion. I really want to keep one of these but they do got massive just like actual red-tailed catfish a lot smaller than the real red tail but they'll still get a foot to two feet long so that's the pretty damn big fish, you're gonna need a pretty big tank for it. One of these short body red-tailed catfish is going to run you $650 minimum.

6. Platinum Bichir (Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri)

6. Platinum Bichir (Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri)

Platinum Bichir is rare as hell. It gets about 18 inches long but they aren't very active so you only need about a 125 gallon of water. I mean this colorway is absolutely stunning. He'll stand out in any tank is unavailable impossible to miss, the only problem is it's gonna cost you $1000 minimum.

7. Bumblebee Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus)

Bumblebee Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus)

These guys can get 8 feet long and I'm sure thay haven't told you that because they don't wanna let you know that these guys are gonna outgrow their tanks by a lot but these guys have this really cool bumblebee pattern when they're young and then end up looking a lot like a Goliath Grouper which is another of enormous grouper that lives in Florida but let's be real these groupers should probably not be kept in aquariums because any fish that can get 8 feet long you got to be a damn millionaire to keep that thing. It's gonna cost $250 for a baby.

8. Red Rhino Pious

 Red Rhino Pious

This thing is just absolutely insane. Sometimes it's called an orange Asher Meyer Scorpion fish, it's a type of Scorpion fish and a type of a frogfish and it has an insanely fast bite. It's an ambuse predator so it doesn't need much space that'll kind of just hang out to camouflage out in the open but i mean this thing can't do much camouflaging. They really expensive some varieties can cost over $1000.

9. Golden Heart Trigger Fish(Balistes Punctatus)

Golden Heart Trigger Fish(Balistes Punctatus)

This is a saltwater fish. It is very aggressive like most saltwater fish and most trigger fish and interestingly enough it's only gets nine inches at max which is very small for a trigger they do need about a 150 gallon though because they swim around a lot which makes them a lot of fun because the have insane patterns and it's really just a hard fish to miss, they're impossible to breed in a tank because their young are so unbelievably tiny that they just get sucked up into a filter and immediately die. It's cost $200 to $300 to keep one of these.

10. Japanese Dragon Eel (Enchelycore pardalis)

Japanese Dragon Eel (Enchelycore pardalis)

This is an absolutely insane monster, if you can land your hands on one of these, you are an expert aquarist, you're absolute beast and your friends wi love you for it. This thing has terrible eyesight but it'll literally eat anything that fits in its mouth it'll just go up and snatch up any fish, it'll literally just destroy invertebrates and it'll also jump out of your tank in an instant. They are insanely rare I saw one of these at my local fish store about a year back and it was being sold for $1500 and it got sold pretty fast. You're gonna need a massive aquarium for it because these guys get so big I mean it's an average of 45 inches long but i've heard them getting up to 60 inches.

I guess that's all i can say to you guys, thank you. Please tell me if you want more articles like this.. Thank u so much guys, love ya.
