Pom-pom Crab Care Guide and Information

This is the pom-pom crab, and comes to us from parts of Africa, Asia and Australia. It's a curious little crab that gets its name from the pom-pom shaped filters on their claws. Now this crab is a very special crab, it's quite new to the hobby and not a lot is known about this crab. Because until recently those in the hobby didn't have the equipment to replicate waters from around the world so they primarily only kept a local or easy to care for fish.

Now a fish from around the world can be shipped and kept a virtually everywhere and this includes crabs. So, let's go over some of the stuff that we do know about the pom-pom crab. The pom-pom crab is a rather peaceful tech inhabitants. However it's important to note that this crab is omnivorous, meaning it will eat vegetation and if possible other inhabitants. So, while they can be kept together they might prey on smaller crabs or tank mates. Some reports in the hobby claim fish and shrimps and then witnessing their crab munching on pieces of shrimp and fish. So, while a might not actively hunt fish and shrimp they might be more of the opportunistic hunters and catched him if they can.

The pom-pom crab also been observed burrowing disappearing for a day or two, so if you don't see them right away they might just be hiding. This crab is also quite the climber and can possibly escape if its aquarium is not sealed off correctly. The pom-pom is set to be a fully aquatic crab, means when it comes to the tank setup for this crab it's best to use a sandy substrate with tough platns like the anubius as the pom-pom crab might consume small and fragile plants. And if you do end up keeping plans to do note that copper which found fertilizers can be toxic to invertebrates, so it's best not to use fertilizers for plants just like crayfish, you'll need to provide them with calcium. And they accept all types of sinking foods as they are scavengers but they'll also eat algae and anything they catch in their filters. And lastly, they should be kept with a neutral pH and a temperature in between 65 and 80 degrees fahrenheit.
